susan stellin to discuss their new memoir chancers , which tells the story of their relationship over the course of graham’s heroin addiction, arrest and imprisonment at riker’s island and immigration detention, and eventual release and road to recovery. in the second half of the show, we discuss a few brilliant photobooks as well graham’s early days as an aspiring photographer in new york in the 90s. we are thrilled to have this episode as the season finale. i’ve known graham for a few years now and ended up reading the book in about three days. it’s a great story that covers some very relevant contemporary issues in an innovative way. graham and susan are two of the most thoughtful, intelligent people i’ve met in new york, so it was a great to have this conversation with them. born in scotland, graham macindoe studied painting at edinburgh college of art and received a master’s degree in photography at the royal college of art in london. he is an adjunct professor of photography at parsons the new school in new york city as well as a working photographer. graham’s photographs have appeared in many newspapers and magazines, including the new york times, the guardian weekend magazine, new york, harpers, fast company, w, details, i.d., vice and esquire. his work has been shown widely, most recently at little big man gallery in los angeles where he had his first solo exhibition all in – buying into the drug trade in conjunction with the release of a book by little big man books. susan stellin is a reporter and frequent contributor to the new york times, where she worked as an editor for several years. she is the author of how to travel practically anywhere, a travel planning guide, and has a b.a. in political science from stanford university. we would like to send a special thank you to graham and susan for hosting our wrap party. it was a blast. and thank you for turning in this season! it was an inspiring season. we hope you enjoyed it and discovered a reporter and a photographer tell their gripping story of falling in love, the heroin habit that drove them apart, and the unlikely way a criminal conviction brought them back together. when susan stellin asked graham macindoe to shoot her author photo for an upcoming travel book, she barely knew him except for a few weekends with mutual friends at a summer house in montauk. he was a gregarious, divorced scotsman who had recently gotten sober; she was an independent new yorker who decided to take a chance on a rough-around-the-edges guy. but their relationship was soon tested when susan discovered that graham still had a drug habit he was hiding. from their harrowing portrayal of the ravages of addiction to the stunning chain of events that led to graham’s arrest and imprisonment at rikers island, chancers unfolds in alternating chapters that offer two perspectives on a relationship that ultimately endures against long odds. susan follows graham down the rabbit hole of the american criminal justice system, determined to keep him from becoming another casualty of the war on drugs. graham gives a stark, riveting description of his slide from brownstone brooklyn to a prison cell, his gut-wrenching efforts to get clean, and his fight to avoid getting exiled far away from his son and the life he built over twenty years. beautifully written, brutally honest, yet filled with suspense and hope, chancers will resonate with anyone who has been touched by the heartache of addiction, the nightmare of incarceration, or the tough choice of leaving or staying with someone who is struggling on the road to recovery. by sharing their story, susan and graham show the value of talking about topics many of us are too scared to address. listen to graham info zoom info zoom info all in and self-portraits by graham macindoe the images in this series are of heroin bags collected years ago during a period of the artists own addiction to the drug. graham mcindoe became intrigued by the typography and design of the glassine envelopes used to package dope, stamped and marked with references to the popular culture of the time like twilight, crooklyn and new jack city. dealers branded and marketed their product like entrepreneurs in any business, pairing names like dead medicine with a skull and crossbones to appeal to risk-takers, or an airplane labeled first class to give the illusion of grandeur. the addict becomes the ultimate consumer of the ultimate product – following a trail of quirky street names carefully chosen to be instantly recognizable to those in the know. but there is nothing hidden about the references to good times (so amazing, true romance, high life), juxtaposed with reminders of the gamble (9 lives, black jack) and the reality of addiction (flat liner, undertaker). lou reed wrote the song “perfect day” to describe being on heroin, and that’s what every addict chases. but the marketing of that drug, like any product, doesn’t always lead us to what’s promised. these images are a reminder of both the power of desire and the promises we as consumers want to believe will somehow change our lives. published by in flagrante is often cited as the most important photographic book on england in the 1980s. published in 1988, this work portrays the steady decline of communities in northern england–former manufacturing powerhouses that were gradually compromised by the policies of margaret thatcher and her predecessors from the mid-1970s onward. killip’s black-and-white photographs were mostly taken with 4 x 5 film, and provide an unflinching look at these disenfranchised northern towns and the poverty visited upon them by deindustrialization. be sure to read the conversation between killip and joined by photographer and zine maker jason jaworski to discuss the stories behind his brilliant zines, the relationship between text and image, how he got his start, the freelance hustle in los angeles, and several interesting books from his collection. i was introduced to jason’s work by our mutual friend olia yatskevich of 10x10 photobooks , and knew we’d have to have him on the show. fortunately, a few months later jason reached out to us because he was a fan of the show. he also mentioned he was coming to new york soon, so it all worked out perfectly. jason jaworski (b. 1987) is a writer, photographer and artist best known for his intimate portraits, sprawling textworks, large scale performance projects, and deeply personal artist books, all of which have been published and shown in numerous exhibitions around the world, along with having been performed privately to persons as wide ranging as ringo starr and werner herzog. his most recent exhibition, thinking of you , was nominated for an icp infinity award in the arts category, while an artist book he created to accompany the exhibition was chosen as one of the top ten photobooks of 2015 by 10x10 photobooks. he or through negligence, all my cameras broke except for a small, focus-less, single aperture half-frame camera i had brought with me. not caring about what kind of pen i was using, i started to write down whatever images i could through whatever means i had. then, a couple days before i was to leave, a large explosion occurred in the city at the pemex executive tower, killing 37 people and injuring over 120 more. i collected a jar of ash from the blast site and, upon returning to my studio in los angeles, started exploring ways to incorporate the time i spent there into a meaningful project. through a series of combined experimental processes, i came up with a system of crude techniques to use while developing my negatives, involving placing the ash from the actual blast site into my development canisters, along with using excessive agitation, boiling water and intentional sun / light exposure. the result, along with the smaller half-frame negative i was forced to use, gives the grain and silver in the image an extra nuance when enlarged, texturally mimicking both ash and sandpaper- as though the images were brushed with steel wool or were the remnants from a fire. an artist book created for the project was published by ssk press in 2014. images from the project were exhibited as part of a public art installation at bosque de chapultepec in mexico city. zoom info zoom info zoom info zoom info zoom info zoom info two winters long by jason jaworski completed in sequence in early 2016, two winters long is comprised entirely of images created within the 2015 winter season. originally begun as a separate project while working in cambodia teaching art at an ngo to orphans, the images were soon collected and sequenced together with others created throughout the same season in new york, los angeles, tijuana, san francisco, san ysidro, oahu and scranton. relating to the multiple losses of life endured over the winter season, the title, two winters long, serves to engage in the aspect of time and how one winter in cambodia bled into multiple others at different locales- a sort of season of memory and the simultaneous burden and relief that comes with the loss of life. threaded throughout the entire project is a longing from someone acknowledging the knowledge only understood when one has endured enough; a melancholy knowing that love, although infinite in its intangible manner, will eventually expire when combined with that deceptively delicate other half that is the physical. an artist book produced by ssk press to accompany the project debuted in the focus:photography section at the geffen contemporary at moca in los angeles for the 2016 la art book fair. discussed in episode 3.25 with jason jaworski jason jaworski rome alone by jason jaworski rome alone is a collection of images created on a two-week trip in and around a bootleg factory in southern taiwan in early 2014. the project gets its title from a fake home alone sweatshirt i found that was mistakenly spelled ‘rome alone’. intrigued by the inadvertent poetry being created in these products, i interviewed and followed several of the factory workers on their breaks at night, accompanying them to various night markets and hawker stands while they milled about together and ate. every few days i would develop my negatives and make small work prints from which the workers would choose their favorites. using the selected images, i laid out a bookdummy which i had printed at the actual bootleg factory i was shadowing and bound the pages with rubber bands from the night markets most frequently visited by the workers. afterward, i left copies of the dummy on the tables and stands at the night market for them to discover and flip through, bringing the project full circle. an artist book produced by ssk press to accompany the project was shown at the geffen contemporary at moca in los angeles for the 2014 la art book fair. discussed in episode
